Do you ever feel stuck when you think about organizing?
That point where you walk into the guest room (garage, closet, kitchen….) ready to tackle it and organize the heck out of it, but as soon as you open the door and peer in – you freeze.
All your energy disappears and you just shut the door and walk away instead?
Yeah, I know that feeling!
My organizing clients think I can walk into a room, look beyond all the clutter and instantly know where I’ll arrange everything. Or even have a clue how it will look when I’m done.
Yeah, I don’t have a clue any more than they do.
The difference between me and them? I just get started!
One main thing that sets me, as a professional organizer, apart from my clients is that I don’t try to figure out the end before I’ve begun. I simply start.
How do you do it?
That’s it – you’re organizing like a professional organizer!
Organizers love that you think you have to do a whole project at once. That’s what keeps our schedules full. And as an organizer it truly is the most efficient way to work with a client in their home.
BUT….. If you’re going solo with your organizing, don’t make it a project.
In my own home I rarely do big organizing projects.
And it’s not because my home never gets cluttered. With a husband, kid, pets, active business and fast life our house can be insane!
No, I keep the clutter to a minimum by doing something little every day.
No matter how busy you are – even if you’re a mom of a newborn or a caretaker for a seriously ill spouse – you can do this. I promise.
How do you do it?
When you see a shelf that’s getting out of control, take a moment and fix it.
Pull everything off, wipe it down, purge and replace it all neatly.
Even if you only do a half or a quarter of the shelf.
Just do something small each day and the whole home stays under control.
This even works if you have an overwhelming area.
Don’t focus on doing all of it, do just 10 minutes of sorting then walk away.
You’ll be surprised how those little sorting sessions can quickly transform your room with barely any effort.
Tiny, daily bites will not only get your home organized, but it’ll stay that way forever.
Secret #3: It’s all in your head
The reality is, organizing is truly all in our heads. The thoughts we have control how our home looks.
A professional organizer can be most effective with a client when they work with them consistently over months.
Because then we have the chance to truly change their minds. To create new ways of thinking through repetition of thoughts.
Working once with a client can help them get to a base point that makes it easier to manage, but it doesn’t change their thoughts or habits.
That can only be done by repetition.
How do you do it?
Make it a point to think about organizing and feel gratitude for what you already own every day. It will begin to show in how your home looks and feels.
This is the concept I designed my 365 Project around.
One simple organizing thought a day to keep it top of mind. And it works brilliantly!
Here’s what one member of 365 Project said:
You can do this, too.
Take one action, focus on one gratitude or read one organizing concept each day and you’ll begin to see a change in how you behave in your home.
When you change your mind, you change your home.
That’s right – organizing is never actually done.
While work with your organizer may come to an end when you’ve gone through each part of your home, it won’t stay that way.
Just like that diet – you can’t go back to sugar and pizza once it’s done and expect to keep the results you just worked hard for.
Those daily actions and thoughts must continue.
Otherwise, you’ll find yourself blaming the organizer because her systems didn’t stay organized.
How do you do it?
Think of organizing as a process and you’ll be much more successful.
You’ll take the pressure off of “finishing” and you can relax into a continuous touch-up habit.
You’ll feel more successful over your baby steps because they’re part of a lifestyle change.
So, what about my organizer?
