I’m talkin’ about home decor today. Are you ready?
So often in our homes, we display items that we feel are pretty, that reflect our personality or bring back memories. This is great! It’s what makes your home unique and beautiful to you. I have a fun collection of gnomes and quotes from movies. However…
…after a while of seeing the same decorations repeatedly, our minds stop really seeing them. We look right past them. And a lot of times we have more decorations and memorabilia than space to display them. The bookshelves and walls become cluttered and it’s not a way to honor the items.
In fact, I challenge you! Close your eyes and try to describe in detail a room in your house. Write out a list of items. Now, grab your phone and take a picture. List the items you see in the photo and compare. Often times seeing a photo of our spaces allows our brains to really see what’s there again.
Enter the decor bin!
The easiest way to avoid clutter and refresh your space is to keep a bin of decoration and memorabilia items to swap out. Much like the Christmas bin, this is simply a nicely packed, sturdy box you can pull out occasionally and change out the items on display with the ones in the box. This will refresh the decor so you notice and appreciate it again and reduce the clutter.
This is also a great way to keep kids toys fresh! Rotating items allows them room to shine. It’s also a good chance to take a break from the super annoying toys. You know the ones….
As we approach the new year, when you put away Christmas, eye your spaces with the decor bin in mind. Whether you rotate based on the month or a holiday is up to you.
Let me know in the comments if you’re going to try this or if you’re already doing it!
